The Red Lion is a warm and welcoming pub situated in the City of London in Moorgate. The beautiful building is situated on the corner of Wilson Street, and the point where South Place becomes Eldon Street. With many newer offices, shops and restaurants, our neighbourhood’s modern appearance belies its long history.

The pub was built in 1887 and its name, The Red Lion, is one of the most common for pubs in England. There are over 600 other pubs named ‘The Red Lion’ across the country. The name can be traced back to the Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt, whose heraldic emblem was a red lion. John was one of the most powerful men in the country in the 14th century, and many pub owners named their establishments after his emblem to demonstrate their loyalty.

Inside our pub, big feature windows and wooden flooring create a bright & inviting space. A favourite of locals who work in the nearby office buildings, the Red Lion is particularly buzzing during lunchtime and early evening. The pub has a selection of large screen TV's perfect for enjoying the live sporting action. Or why not perch on one of the stools lining our windows and watch the passers-by on busy Eldon Street.

An original 19th century staircase leads up to our charming function room. With room for up to 50 people, this space is perfect for private events. Its two large TV screens make it a great choice for private live sports viewing, while it can also be adapted to suit birthday parties and work functions. The function room features attractive picture windows along with other distinctive historic features. The function room has a separate entrance from our main pub, as well as its own bar and toilets, ensuring privacy for your special event. Whatever the occasion, we look forward to welcoming your function to the Red Lion.
