FUNCTIONS AT Watergates Bar
The Watergates is an eye-catching underground pub on Watergate Street, beneath the historic heart of Chester. The pub sits in the 12th century undercroft of The Old Crypt, which is the oldest building on Watergate Street and part of the unique Chester Rows.
A series of distinctive medieval buildings, The Rows are celebrated for their idiosyncratic galleried walkways and exquisite, half-timbered facades. Today these wonderful buildings are home to many of Chester’s most exclusive shops. Which is fitting, as The Rows themselves are a legacy of the prosperous middle ages when Chester was North West England’s largest trading port.
The Watergates pub is lit by theatrical, modern chandeliers and decorated in soothing, heritage tones. The bar is a large and imposing focal point in The Watergates, beautifully complemented by thoughtful seating, welcoming banquettes and a series of intriguing side rooms. Once used as wine cellars, these rooms create a delightful sense of privacy, especially when our popular pub is at its busiest. The design of The Watergates is a contemporary slant on our building’s 12th century origins with welcome 21st century details, including live sport on big screen TVs and an extensive selection of interesting and unusual drinks.
The Watergates main function room, known as 'The Barrel Room' incorporates all the styling of the rest of the pub in a more intimate way. The room is softly lit, with a warm and atmospheric setting perfect for celebrations, small parties, formal and informal dinners. The room can hold up to 40 guests, and also offers a perfect place for drinks or dinner after a day at Chester races.
Forming a lovely counterpoint to our underground pub, The Watergates’ roof terrace can also be booked for functions. It’s a fresh, airy space with room for up to 50 guests and has both its own private bar and big screen TV, making it an ideal venue for an informal event. Especially pretty during the summer months, our roof terrace is also heated, so equally inviting on cooler days and in the evening.
