The Whitley Neill story began under the stairs of Johnny Neill’s grandmother’s house when he first discovered her collection of gin bottles.

His family had been distilling since 1762 and his discovery made him eager to learn more – his fascination with gin and its complex distillation process had begun.

Under his grandmother’s expert guidance he learned how to infuse the crisp sharpness of juniper berries with a variety of other flavours and aromas, dramatically changing the taste of each gin he distilled.

Whitley Neil Gin Making

Johnny’s first gin – Whitley Neill Handcrafted Dry Gin – was inspired by his wife’s upbringing in South Africa and her fond memories of the African Baobab Tree, which is also known as the tree of life.  He started the process in very small batches inside Constance, a 100 year old copper pot still and Whitley Neill Gin was born.  It features premium South African botanicals including the super-fruit, baobab, and Cape gooseberry, with a little coriander to push the citrus flavours through.

The original Whitley Neill Gin has won a multitude of gold medals at the world’s finest spirit competitions and its success inspired Jonny to experiment and innovate with even more exotic flavours.

In fact, since creating Whitley Neill Gin, the brand has become synonymous with experimenting and innovating with exceptional flavours from all over the world.

Over the last couple years, Johnny has introduced other distinctive and intriguing flavours to the Whitley Neill range, made following the same principles as the original. Whitley Neill Rhubarb & Ginger is a smooth gin that takes its inspiration from the glorious English countryside; the natural essence of rhubarb gives a tart crisp edge and ginger extract warms the palate for a full-bodied finish.   Botanicals include juniper, lemon and orange peel, orris bark, angelica root, coriander seeds, rhubarb essence along with ginger extract.

Whitley Neill’s ethos has always been around curiosity, discovery and innovation and in the future we can expect new expressions, as consumers become more excited and open to trying new things.

Thanks to Jonny Neill, a craft gin pioneer, Whitley Neill has been at the forefront of handcrafted gins, which have enjoyed a renaissance over the last few years.
